York, England
York, 55 miles north of Manchester, has been for years one of England's most important cities. Thanks to its rich history as a political and religious powerhouse, York is one of the most interesting tourist destinations outside of London.
Surrounded by walls built during the 13th century, York's historic centre is packed with attractions, the most famous of which is York Minster, one of the largest medieval cathedrals in Europe.
Other notable attractions include St Mary's Abbey, Clifford's Tower, Castle Museum, Jorvik Viking Centre, the National Railway Museum and the Roman Walls.
Most hotels in York are either located within the city walls, within a reasonable walking distance of the city centre or within less than a 5-minute drive.
